LinkedHealth is a custom technology solutions developer for the healthcare provider industry. Project Lead, Todd Oliver, needed to provide his client with a scanning solution which could be tightly integrated with their internal EMR (Electronic Medical Records) and EPM (Electronic Practice Management) software. By using Atalasoft's DotImageWinForms, DotImageWebForms, and DotTwain, Oliver's team was able to create a scanning/document imaging solution that was customized to be tied directly to the EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system, thus allowing the scanning of patient documents directly to the EMR patient record.
Scanning directly to a Database
What was innovative, original, or exemplary about LinkedHealth's solution was that DotImage and DotTwain enabled the team to build a 100% .NET scanning/document management solution tightly integrated with EMR & EPM systems The resulting application solution included both Rich Client (Windows Forms) and Thin Client Web Application (using ASP.NET) elements. Features of the end product include database storage of images, allowing scalable storage solutions, horizontal partitioning of tables and the increased security of the images not being accessible on the file system. The custom integration with existing vendor product exceeded their competitive offering.
Todd Oliver: Our solution integrates with an existing legacy database to retrieve patient information and information concerning the patient's activities. We then relate this information to scanned documents. By using the combination of DotImage and DotTwain, we were able to immediately mark-off 40% of our functional requirements, Oliver said. The open API architecture of DotImage and DotTwain made the integration and customization a straight-forward intuitive process.
On the capabilities of DotTwain specifically, Oliver said, "We are really happy with the ability to offer our clients support of any scanner without cumbersome proprietary drivers. This increases our potential customer base and makes supporting various hardware solutions a breeze. The speed and over stability of the product has also helped reduce development costs."
The estimated development cost savings is in the tens of thousands of dollars according to Oliver, as well as a reduction of the development cycle by several months.
