    Continuous upgrades

    Hi,

Can you tell me what the best upgrade method is to upgrade all of our satellite dotimage appications?

We have quite a lot of applications running. Well they are the same or similar document management application but sit as different code in different web sites.

Therefore to upgrade a 5.0b application to 5.0c takes a couple of minutes plus deployment to 2 servers.

Then we need to times that by x applications per customer?

    You see my problem.

Infragistics offer an upgrade application. This leaves you with only having to recompile to dll.

Is Atalasoft working on a similar product?

    Re: Continuous upgrades

    Graham,

You must be talking about upgrading SDK's?  In that case, we don't offer a product.  The process is usually as simple as changing the references from 4.0 to 5.0 in your project.  When installing a hotfit (5.0b to 5.0c for example) the process is just to reinstall the SDK, then rebuild your application.  Nothing else required.

I'm not sure why you would have to go through this process when upgrading existing customers.  Typically you would build a new version of your application with the newer version of the DotImage SDK, then deploy to your customer with an install package, or X-copy deploy.  That's all you need to do.  If it's a web app, then you will need to reactivate server serial numbers when upgrading major versions, but not for minor versions.

Infragistics offers a tool to upgrade all your Visual Studio projects from one version to another.  I've heard about it, but it's not something we are looking at right now.  But we can consider it for DotImage when upgrading major versions.

    Re: Continuous upgrades

    Thanks for the reply.

I am talking about the sdk kit and then deployment.

I thought that the dll reference for 5.0b to 5.0c would be different.

Therefore to upgrade each application we would need to:

    - reinstall dotimage sdk
    - change the dll references in the app.
    - recompile and x-copy deploy.

I didn't realise that the license for minor versions was the sane, that's one less job.

     Thank.

    Re: Continuous upgrades

I think your response answers my question too but I want to make sure.  What I wish to do is have different versions of Atalasoft SDKs installed on my PC.  This is because we have different versions deployed in the field embedded in out product that I need to develop for and maintain.  This means I need my SDK to be installed for say Version 4 thru 6 on my PC.  I assume that I can do that and that my license will properly authenticate.  All I need to do is for each version of my product, add a Visual Studio reference to the version of your product I wish to run with.

Did I get that right Bill?

    Re: Continuous upgrades

    Greetings, Larry --

You can certainly have different major versions on your machine (that is standard operating procedure for me).  You will need to have activated your serial number for each version with the Toolkit Activation Wizard that comes with that version (they install into different directories), and then make sure you do not cross-pollinate your projects (for example, you cannot run versions 5.0 and 6.0 in the same project).

For the minor versions (like 5.0a to 5.0b), you will only have one -- installing 5.0b overwrites 5.0a.

    Re: Continuous upgrades

Ok.  I hope I'm not a bother.  But I need one more piece of clarification.  I currently have an app using DotTwain 2.1 and DotImage 4.0.  I could either download and use the DotImage 5.0g which includes the DotTwain.  Or I can download the DotTwain 5.0.  I was thinking at this point of minimally impacting my code so I'd only upgrade the DotTwain to 5.0.  ANy thoughts?  Good idea?  Horrible idea?

    Re: Continuous upgrades

Unfortunately, DotTwain 5.0 is not compatible with DotImage 4.0, so you would need to upgrade DotImage as well.
