AtalaImage.ImageData will definitely be removed in DotImage 8.0 to allow for better memory management (the only backwards incompatible change needed). The obsolete message you get if you use this is more severe now. The replacement code is simple (use PixelMemory instead).

New Features

We changed the Barcode reader extensively. Please check documentation for changes.
The Activation Utility gives a more detailed warning when you have requested too many activations and it is making a temporary license.
When you use an ImageSource with web controls, we now can avoid reading the whole image when making thumbs or tiles.
We now put up a splash screen inside of Visual Studio when you are using a temporary license.
We now verify that SDK and Server licenses are not mixed in a project.
We now support ISIS import drivers.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug that encoded EMF files upside down and with the blue and red channels swapped.
Fixed a bug when reading the annotations from some PDFs with annotations, which could cause a StackOverflowException.
Fixed a bug where overloads available in OcrEngine were not available in TesseractEngine (e.g. using an ImageSource).
The Ink demos where fixed so that they correctly load saved ink annotations.

We added a workaround for a temporary memory leak in the implementation of Ink on Windows. It does not implmement Dispose() correctly, so we force the GC to dispose the Ink objects.
We increased the accuracy of deskewing color documents.
A bug was fixed where calling the PdfTextDocument constructor with a filename left the file open after the object was disposed.
We deploy JavaScript and image resources used by the web controls to your DotImage installation directory, so that you can add them to your project when you don't want to get them from the assembly resources.
Fixed a bug in the WebAnnotationViewer where the case of getToolTip and setToolTip on client side annotations were not the same.
Fixed a printing bug in the WebImageViewer and WebAnnotationViewer that caused an error message to appear instead of printing.
We added some error handling for the PixRunZone ISIS call
Added a check to make sure that Server licenses are not embedded in resources.

Updated RawDecoder to support many new cameras.
An event named CreateUniquePageName was added to all web controls to allow the user to control the part of the cache filename that refers to the page.

Annotations in the WebAnnotation viewer could shrink when rotated and then moved. This has been fixed.
Corrected code sample for the ImageAcquired event in the Developer’s Guide.
Fixed a problem in the DICOM decoder where JPEG encoded images were interpreted internally as RGB, not YCbCr.
Updated the PdfDecoder to fix a problem with certain encrypted documents.
Updated internal code for handling PDF document objects to correctly handle dates encoded has hex strings.

Added the ability to read the dotImage 7.0 xmp data format.
The client-side JavaScript functions getName() and getUserName() were added to the JavaScript Annotation object that is used to represent an annotation in the WebAnnotationViewer.
The WebImageViewer, WebThumbnailViewer and WebAnnotationViewer all have a new event called CreateSessionId. If you handle it, you can use something other than Session.SessionID to identify sessions.
Resolved a bug where image resolution information is not retrieved from exif information if it cannot be determined from the image directly
A bug was fixed that causes an ArithmeticException to be thrown on some 64 bit systems during a licensing check.
Recognition of I2of5, Intelligent Mail, Royal Mail 4 State, Canada Post 4 State and DataMatrix barcodes was improved.
A documentation problem was fixed in the Document Management Tutorial where Load() was called instead of Open()

Fixed a bug that caused multiple Size actions to be added into the Undo manager during a single resize.
Fixed a bug with Mirror actions not being added to an undo resize event.

A bug was fixed in the TIFF codec that caused some TIFFS with errors not to load at all.
For DotTwain, the ExtendedImageInfo for the ImageAcquired event was null. Now, if the device doesn't support it, it will not be null, but the options may be. If it is supported, the object will contain the options that are supported.

A bug was fixed that caused the WebImageViewer to flash if the scrollbars were changed programmatically.
A UserName property was added to annotations in the WebAnnotationViewer.

Added DitherCommand

Reduces multi-bit images (8 gray, 24 bgr, 32 bgr, 32 bgra) to two colors.
This command supports either Floyd-Steinberg (ie, error diffusion), or ordered dithering (matrix screen). FS dithering is implicit in the ApplyPaletteCommand, but (incorrectly) leaves the user with an 8-bit color mapped image instead of a 1-bit image. This new command separates out the functionality. The FS dithering is several times faster than the old implementation and goes to 1-bit.
It also includes an optional “serpentine” mode which samples the image alternately left-right and right-left. Ordered dithering provides a very fast means of simulating true halftoning.
In addition to traditional patterned screens, you can design your own patterns to create elliptical, rectangular, slatted or other screen patterns.

64 bit builds of DotImage and most add-on modules

This is very important for server-based imaging, because it allows you can keep more images and larger images in memory. At this time, OCR, Isis, DWG. and Twain lack 64 bit support.

DbImageSource Support for accessing database images

All viewers that support ImageSource can now read images from a database. Support for reading blobs or image data using the database to get a filename.

Native AutoDeskewCommand

Runs natively on 1 bit, 8 bit, 24 bit, and 32 bit formats. In addition to document processing, this will also improve the page processing speed of all OCR engines that use deskewing on gray or color images.

Visual Studio 2008 Support

Drag'n' drop DotImage components with VS2008 just like in Visual Studio 2003, Visual Studio 2005, and Visual Studio 2008.

Improved the performance of the PdfEncoder for Flate image compression.

PDF Decoder Performance

Greatly increased efficiency. Uses memory proportional to the region size and renders only what is necessary for the region.
WebImageViewer tiles (which are regions) can be created much more quickly using less memory
Drawing a Page object to a Graphics object, the mechanism via which you print now supports having a tile size allowing for the printing of significantly larger PDFs and much higher DPIs without running out of memory as only one tile is in memory at a time.

Threaded Image Processing

More image processing commands operate using multiple threads, commands can be configured to multithread automatically.

RAW File Support

Improved support and reliability for RAW files.
Decoder supports many more cameras and has many small bug fixes and improvements.

Improved ease of use for web thumbnails and annotations

Web thumbnails now automatically show annotations on their associated viewer.
Coding requirements are minimal.

Additional multi-threaded Image Processing Commands with automatic creation when possible

Multi-threated commands are faster on multi-core machines

Speed increase depends on number of cores, image size and the specific command. For example, on a 2-core system various threshold commands run in 54-70% of the time it took previously. To a point, if you double the cores, you can an approximate doubling of the speed.
