Try the DotTwain update we just released.  I've been using DotTwain in Vista successfully.  I think it depends on the driver though.  What scanner are you using?  Perhaps we have something similar here we can test for you.  DotTwain does support buffered memory transfer; I believe just by setting a property.  The ...
